With the advent of game used jersey cards and autographed cards in the mid to late 1990\'s, the sports card industry was forever changed. Collectors began seeking out these special new inserts with a piece of history or a player auto at any cost, and rightfully so. The jersey cards and autographed cards have been a welcome addition to most personal collections.
Lost in the midst of this jersey and auto craze was the lowly insert. Many times the insert cards were just as rare as the jersey and autographed cards. Furthermore, the insert cards were usually made for only star players. There weren\'t any linemen or punters with an insert card, just the big names. Dan Marino, Michael Jordan, Cal Ripken Jr., Wayne Gretzky and other major stars in their respective sports were featured on these rare inserts.
The manufaturers, Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Pacific, and Upper Deck mainly, also added a little vintage to the mix. With the creation of insert cards featuring hall of famers and some of the greatest players from the past. Collectors young and old were being reintroduced to names like Wilt Chamberlain, Jim Brown, and MIckey Mantle.
